Hot Corner

Feels like a Friday, but it’s a Thursday. A breeze comes through the window and I have no water again. They’re tearing up the street outside my building, some water pipe problems. They did it yesterday and now, today.

Last night someone was being waked (woken?) at the funeral home around the corner. According to Bill the street was crowded with people and cars. I think the dead person was a ninja bike enthusiast since I heard a lot of motorcycles revving up for about 10 minutes.

I watched Walk Hard last night. I bought a previously viewed copy from Netflix. I love this movie, still gets a few laughs from me. I watched the theatrical version last night and the incredibly self indulgent directors cut this afternoon. If Juan stops by this weekend I might watch it again. Watched that and then some David Letterman before turning in.

Woke up around 7:30, did my thing, showered, made coffee, sat in front of the computer when I noticed that my eyeglasses were broke. Not the lenses but the right arm? Stem? Anyway it was a bit off. There wasn’t a screw missing (insert joke here), but apparently there was a spring missing. I called Cohen’s Fashion Optical in Manhattan and found out when they were open till.

They’re located at 805 Third Avenue in Manhattan. I work across the street at 800 Third Avenue. That meant I had to head into the city, basically going to work on my day off. The salesman at the store Evan, well I detected that he was into me back in November, so I decided to dress appropriately.

The chaps were at the cleaners and I couldn’t find my coochie cutters, so I went indie rocker I suppose. It’s basically what I’ve been wearing the past 10 years or so during summer months. All that’s missing is a skateboard. Evan was glad to see me and was able to arrange to have the frames repaired within the next week.

I walked around Manhattan for a bit, listening to Girl Talk and grinning a lot. Harpy and I had a nice chat on the phone about Girl Talk and other things. That was a lot of fun. Also spoke to my sister Annemarie, las night who misses being out here at this time of year like she’s been for the past decade or so. I miss having her around here too. Hence a bummer summer for both of us.

Out of all my siblings we’re the closest, much to the occasional snarky comment from Frank and Brian. But that’s a whole ‘nother entry. Today I sent her an email suggesting that she go to the Funplex and Dance This Mess Around. Hopefully that’s what she’s doing.

Bill just ran in and ran out. He’s going to see a Yankees Red Sox game tonight. I hate the Yankees. If I had to make a choice it would be the Mets. We were a Mets family when I was growing up.

I went to a few games at Shea Stadium, including one time with the Lodi Boy’s Club where I saw a Pittsburgh Pirates game and Willie Stargell hit a foul ball crack his bat in half and the top part of it went flying in the stands and smashed someone right in the face.

The boys of summer indeed.

I smoked a Padron while wandering around Manhattan, headed to the Path train. Wandered though Hoboken and bought a lemonade sweetened with Stevia from 2 enterprising lads on Washington Street. I guess I prefer Stevia in my coffee. The lemonade was good, but sugar would have helped.

I almost got hit by 2 cars this morning as I was crossing Washington Street. I had the light but car # 1 was driving south and not paying attention. I put up my hand, specifically one finger, and not the middle digit and he stops, signaling his apology.

Then as I was walking into the northbound side, car # 2 was rolling through the red light. I threw up my hands in dismay. Such idiots, and they were both on their cellphones as they were driving through red lights.

So that’s it for now, a busy and hot Thursday afternoon. Here’s some snaps.

Boy blue

Blonde with ciggie

Bananas

95 scorching degrees? Break out the dark clothes!

The enterprising entrepreneurs selling organic lemonade with Stevia! Kudos!

No No No

Well it’s Friday for me, Wednesday for everyone else. I have off until I go back to work on Tuesday. Woo hoo! What will I do? Not much actually. Sleep in more than likely. Crazy shit on the news this morning, sent shivers down my spine.

A 16 year old boy, with a friend video taping, inflates a pillow, places an 8 month old baby on the pillow, then the 16 year old drops onto the pillow with his knees sending the infant through the air, the baby landing on the floor bawling it’s eyes out while the teens laugh.

It’s a horror show and after spending time with Julio and Stine’s son Alexander, the thought of harming an infant makes me want to beat that 16 year old within an inch of his life. So I have 30 years on him, compared to what he did to the baby, it seems fair.

The kids posted it on youtube and a high school teacher saw it and reported it to the authorities and now the 16 year old is in jail, hopefully he is something to trade for in jail, trade him for cigarettes. Generic cigarettes at that.

I read the other day, that Matt Lauer on the Today show said Osama rather than Obama, 3 times. Yes, having been running for election for about 2 years now, he still is new to the scene, with that ‘new’ candidate smell.

Corporate owned media is just so disgusting, and when they call it the liberal media, I have to wonder just who it is they are talking about. I get by on Truth Out and Media Matters, as well as the Daily Show and The Colbert Report. Keith Olbermann, gets a pass, but loses points due to the timbre of his voice. Brian Williams and the rest I have little or no respect for.

The local news is bearable sometimes. Though Janice Huff’s reports on adopting foster children usually breaks my heart. They usually have pre teens who I guess in the world of adoption usually get passed over for babies.

Work was very slow today. I didn’t mind. I had a few things to do as well as making sure things would run somewhat smoothly while I was out of the office. It was a nice day to wander around midtown, getting my penne, pesto and chicken.

I ran into Dave G, a former co-worker from the Wanker Banker years. He’s not happy and he’s still there in an affiliated company. Good to see him. He”s a spiritual type into Reiki and things like that. He actually practices Reiki, which according to the Reiki website is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing.

It is administered by “laying on hands” and is based on the idea that an unseen “life force energy” flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. Oh that unseen life force energy. I was looking for it, but since it was unseen I couldn’t find it.

I watched Juno last night. It was ok. It wasn’t the rave that I heard. Ellen Page was good as was Michael Cera and the rest of the cast, but the script was just too clever, too hip. I wasn’t enthralled by it and I also found the songs a bit twee. Kimya Dawson, well…let’s just say I wasn’t impressed.

She makes Jonathan Richman seem hardcore.

And this, from todays Associated Press:
Madam Marie, Jersey Shore Psychic, Is Dead

ASBURY PARK, N.J. (AP) — The Asbury Park fortuneteller known as Madam Marie, who became a figure of rock ’n’ roll mythology thanks to Bruce Springsteen, died on Friday. She was in her mid-90s.

Her death was announced by her great-granddaughter Sally Castello.

Billing herself as a psychic reader and adviser, Marie Castello had told fortunes on the Asbury Park Boardwalk since the 1930s.

She became famous worldwide in 1973 when Bruce Springsteen paid homage to her in the song “4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy).”

His lyric “Did you hear the cops finally busted Madame Marie for tellin’ fortunes better than they do” cemented her fame.

I thought the line was “Did you hear the cops finally busted Madame Marie for tellin’ fortunes better than they’d be” .

No mention if she died behind bars.
