Singing In The Rain

Saturday, March 8th, 2008

Well it’s been an interesting day to say the least. Woke up with a headache, feeling dehydrated, drank some water, went back to sleep, but the headache wouldn’t go away so I got out of bed and had 2 gel caps. Showered and went out for the bagel and newspaper routine. Called Julio and Stine to see if they wanted anything and Julio requested bagels. Picked those up and did some grocery shopping. It rained quite a bit last night and today promised more rain, but I was relatively lucky and rain free at that moment.

Came home, had breakfast, decided to get a haircut. Mr. L’s on the corner of my block seemed empty when I walked by so I walked in. Unfortunately there were a bunch of guys waiting before me sitting below the window pane. I decided to run some errands instead of waiting and hope for the best later in the afternoon. I did go to the library and picked up the dvd of The History Boys. Bill hadn’t seen the whole thing and getting the dvd was a pretty good idea I thought. Also ran up to the produce store on Washington Street and bought a head of lettuce.

Back at the apartment I chilled out and started to do the laundry. First load was colors as usual. Seemed to go well. I surfed the net as the white started to do their thing. Midway through, I hear a clunk clunk. I don’t pay too much attention since it stopped and I thought it was the construction next door in the rain. Then I started to hear water spilling on the floor and thought the sink might be backed up. It happens. I get up and step into a puddle. There is water pouring out of the top of the hot water heater. Puddles throughout the kitchen heading into the bathroom. I recycled all the newspapers the other day so I scrambled to find something else to sop up the water with.

Found a bunch of rags and set about on my hands and knees mopping up the water after I figured out how to turn off the water. Then I called Peter the landlord who said he’d call someone. I called Julio for some advice but he was in West new York and couldn’t really help. Didn’t matter since the water was turned off anyway. I mopped for about an hour, wringing out rags and dumping the water in the toilet. Then with that done I sat and waited for the guy to show up and do something about the hot water heater. Three hours later I decided to get a haircut since I never heard from this guy. The barber shop was empty when I walked in and I was out of there in about thirty minutes, looking less shaggy but still bangin’.

Called landlord Peter again who explained that the guy named Robert was in the city and would be back soon enough. Robert called about an hour later said he’d be here in about thirty minutes. An hour later Robert appears. Robert is the building handyman, and last I saw him he was painting the fire escape last July at 10:00 at night in the dark. He came over and drained the rest of the water from the heater and he and I moved it into the hallway. He left after that, leaving his tools behind, saying that Bill and I will be getting a new hot water heater tonight.

That was about ninety minutes ago. So Bill and I here now, outside a storm rages from the southwest. No hot water, but we have The History Boys.

Nothing like a nap. I just woke from a nap that was a little over 90 minutes. Crazy dreams, like making out with some Nigerian dude who salivated way too much, ruined a joint it was so bad. I stepped away from the Nigerian dude, telling him I’d be back in a few minutes but he knew I wasn’t coming back. And that was after the dream that took place at my very dark cubicle at work where various strangers were trying to access my computer. Haven’t taken a nap in a while and it was tempting to stay in bed asleep, but I might not have been able to sleep later, after using my sleep quota for the day.

I was able to take a nap after leaving work for the day around 3:30. I had to go to my bank and get a bank check which I did earlier in the day, but they misspelled my name as Jhon, even though it was on the check and also spelled the person’s name who it was going to. I didn’t realize it until I got back to my desk. My work was done and the weather forecast was nothing but rain tonight and tomorrow, promising flooding everywhere so I decided to leave early after the bank corrected their mistakes.

On the way to the bank the second time I did see Liza Minnelli who looked a bit tiny and frail. I said “Hi Liza, you look great.”, just feeling the need to bolster her spirits as she puffed on her Marlboro. Someone had to do it and being the nearest homosexual in the area it fell to me. Didn’t take a picture, but found this one online.

Made it home and started feeling drowsy which lead to the nap. Last night was nothing special after Bill came home and fixed the wireless hookup, meaning changed the Ethernet cable in about 10 minutes. Watched Lost which was very good, all about Juliet, minimal Kate action, just knocked out with the butt of a gun, and less Sawyer and Hurley. Juliet is not one of my favorite characters but last night was pretty good. She did look like Linda McCartney who she played in a TV movie called The Linda McCartney Story so that made watching Lost a little bit more interesting.

After that I made it a point to not watch The History Boys, which is waiting for me at the Hoboken Library by the way. Now it’s raining as promised and though I only slept a little over 90 minutes I’m still pretty drowsy. Food will help, this much I know. Planning on staying in, what else is new? Got some DVD’s, got cable, got books and I’m set. Still haven’t eaten yet, but slowly coming to life. That should be about all for today, for tonight. If anything else happens I’m sure I’ll let you know. Feel free to do whatever it is that you do on a Friday night. I know I will.

I’ll leave you with this

So Fresh, So Clean

Thursday, March 6th, 2008

It’s Thursday. I’m home. No internet connection. Been on the phone for the past hour, dealing with automated voice prompts. Just say ‘Continue’. Continue. ‘I’m sorry. Did you say, ‘Continue?’ Yes. ‘Please don’t talk to anyone else since I hear everything. Now, please unplug this. Now unplug that. Now restart your computer. When you are ready to restart your computer, say Continue’. Continue. ‘I’m sorry, did you say go back?’ No. ‘Ok then. We’ll go back.’ and it’s been like that for an hour.

Spoke with Bill who set up a three way call, a menage a trois phone call with a Cablevision tech guy, also named John. Unplug this, unplug that. I see you have a connection. Maybe it’s this. Maybe it’s that. Nothing happened. The call ended and I still have no connection. Bill slept here last night, but he didn’t do anything since it was working when he left this morning. So he’s coming back to try to restore the connection since it’s all through his Mac and I really don’t know what the fuck I am doing. He’s coming back here then he’s going back to Stuyvesant Town. I told him that it’s no big deal, no need to go out of his way and he seemed a bit annoyed at that. It’s no big deal.

Not having internet access for a day or two, I think I’ll live. But it was the ‘don’t go out of your way’ that may have upset Bill. He said that I’ve been going out of my way to help him the past couple of weeks and it’s the very least he could do. I didn’t see it as going out of my way, just doing what had to be done, especially a pressing matter like having to bury one’s father. Doesn’t really compare, I think. But Bill wants to get this done and out of the way. Perhaps it could be something he has control over and the fact that he would be able to help me, will help him get back on track, and if that’s the case I’m glad to be of some assistance, and I hope he is as well.

Last night Bill was here and we watched The Daily Show and The Colbert Report. I found that The History Boys was on HBO On Demand and switched over to that. I enjoyed it once again, picking up on little things I missed the first time around and still aflame for Frances de la Tour. Bill seemed to be enjoying it as well. Seemed to be, but on closer inspection he was sitting there asleep. I mentioned that perhaps he should go to bed, and he agreed but had tremendous difficulty getting up off the couch. That was worrying.

I ran through a lot of things in my mind with worry, but it turned out that he was just that exhausted and slowly shuffled off to bed. I of course, stayed up to watch the rest of the movie. Didn’t stay up long after that and soon I found myself sleeping relatively comfortable next to Bill who was out cold. So now I’m just hanging out, writing this, and maybe I’ll post it tonight, maybe I won’t. Last I spoke with Bill he was about to get on the bus, so I guess he’ll be home soon. See you later?

Bill came here. Basically the ethernet cable was shot. He found a cable that worked and soon enough he was out the door headed back home. Not very communicative, but I guess that’s alright. He’s my hero tonight and if you don’t like the blog, blame him.

Here’s some pics of the bangin’ mister, what I wore yesterday and today.

Crazy Little Thing Called Love

Wednesday, March 5th, 2008

Well it’s Wednesday and I am so over Wednesday. A lot of hype and what have you got to show for it? Just a hump in the middle of a 5 day work week. True it’s a steep enough hump to get to Friday going downhill. I’m cool with it. Last night, watched TV, Scrubs, Daily Show, Colbert Report and it was all good. Come 9:00 I had no idea what to watch. I do love TV, it has been my erstwhile companion for most of my life. A perfect companion that gives and gives. The babysitter I couldn’t shake, nor did I want to.

I scanned to see what was on and decided to give The History Boys a chance. I did rent it last summer, but I couldn’t get into it. Maybe it was the season, maybe it was me. In any event, I was enraptured by the movie. Totally captivated. It really is a great movie. Great script by Alan Bennett. Great directing by Nicholas Hytner and great acting all around. I loved it. The soundtrack had instrumentals by New Order, The Clash, The Smiths, The Cure, Echo and the Bunnymen and Pigbag, with the final song, Bewitched Bothered and Bewildered sung by (who Julio and Stine call the whiner), Rufus Wainwright.

I can’t recommend this film enough and I regret not seeing it on Broadway. Man was I stupid or what two years ago? Ok maybe stupid is too harsh. Then again I was working with a bunch of snobby Brits and the idea of seeing more Brits on stage was something I would go out of my way to avoid, which I did. And I am developing a crush on Frances de la Tour. Just something about her. I was fascinated by her in Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire, and she’s great in the History Boys, where she actually has lines. Richard Griffiths is touching and the boys are all handsome and endearing. It really made my night which carried over to good feelings for today.

My sister Annemarie had a successful Laughter Yoga group which was a good thing to hear. Spoke with my brother Brian. His son is back in school which is a hopeful thing. Brian and his daughter Cassie are going to our cousin Neil’s wedding party on Friday night. Bill and I canceled due to expenses and the fact that Bill’s not really up for that sort of thing right now. I asked in January if they were going to the wedding party and I had no response which lead me to believe that they weren’t invited. Obviously it turned out that they had been invited. It would be nice to go but then again, after arranging to take the day off, I rearranged it so I would be in anyway. Got to put in a full week of work sometime.

I have a wedding card which I’ll send off, once again apologizing for not being able to go and see that wing of the family all together again. One was missing when Bill and I went to Neil’s house for Thanksgiving in 2005. There is still most of the year ahead, so who knows? Perhaps if Annemarie and the Arcata contingent we can make a day trip down there and say hello. Beats saying hello with a corpse in the room, wouldn’t you think? A reunion of sorts. Works for me. Go rent The History Boys. I don’t think you’ll regret it. And if you do, I’d love to hear what you think of it. Scripps is fine, you’ll see.

Here’s something from YouTube regarding The History Boys.

Actually on 11.9.08 I’ve noticed that the videos are no longer available via YouTube. Bah!
